Charlie Lee reaches semi-finals of Sutton Coldfield International

Charlie Lee underlined his undoubted potential by reaching the semi-finals of the Sutton Coldfield International being staged on the outskirts of Birmingham, England.

Charlie, the reigning English Junior Champion, qualified for the Professional Squash Association (PSA) M5 World Tour with comprehensive victories over compatriots Nigel Stephens and Matthew Broadberry. The young Englishman defeated Nigel Stephens 11-4 11-5 11-5 in just 28 minutes before beating Matthew Broadberry 11-4 11-5 11-5 in an equally impressive 28 minutes.
In the 1st round, Charlie defeated third seed and fellow UNSQUASHABLE player Patrick Rooney 11-5 11-4 11-5.
In the quarter-finals Charlie faced Rory Stewart and started well, getting onto the ball quickly and firing in accurate drives showing supreme touch at the front of the court. Rory played more positively in the next two games and gave Lee a far sterner test, forcing the Englishman to really earn his points. However, despite some spirited play from the Scot, Charlie closed-out an comfortable 45-minute 11-2 11-9 11-8 victory.
In the semi-finals, Charlie faced second seed and fellow Rob Owen Academy (ROA) training partner Jan Van Den Herrewegen. The match proved the best contest of the tournament so far, featuring perhaps the two in form players coming into the event. Jan had looked very strong in his earlier rounds which included an 11-6 11-4 11-2 win over UNSQUASHABLE player Miles Jenkins.
The first game was very even, both playing at a very high pace and looking to take control of the middle. Van Den Herreweggen finding his best form to take a very tight game which showcased the superb hitting and movement of both players. Lee showing signs of frustration for the first time all week in the second game, looking for winners slightly early and making a few errors, Jan taking advantage.
A refocused and patient Lee took to the court for the third game and really made Jan work hard for his points up to 6-6. A couple of good rallies from Lee but he just found the tin on what would have been the winning shot to give Jan the advantage he needed to close out the match 11-8 11-5 11-7. The crowd showing huge appreciation for both players at the end.
