Joel Makin and Sarah-Jane Perry bow-out in China Open quarter-finals

Despite impressive performances, both Joel Makin and fellow UNSQUASHABLE player Sarah-Jane Perry bowed-out of the J.P. Morgan China Squash Open in Shanghai - the first Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour Gold event to be staged under the new PSA tour structure.

Following notable victories over Malaysian Eain Yow Ng and Omar Mosaad in his opening two matches, Makin, the World No.38 and Welsh No.1 was eventually beaten by top seed Simon Rösner with the German No.1 acknowledging that his wealth of experience helped him to emerge victorious during very difficult playing conditions.

Both players had to cope with some difficult court conditions following a period of light rainfall in the build up to their match which was held on an all-glass court erected on top of the Peninsula Shanghai, an open air court overlooking Shanghai’s spectacular Bund, with Rösner taking 71 minutes to eventually overcome a tough challenge from his Welsh rival 11-5 11-7 8-11 11-6.

In the women’s draw, fellow UNSQUASHABLE and Rob Owen Academy player Sarah-Jane Perry had received a bye in the 1st round but beat Joey Chan of Hing Kong 11-6 11-7 11-8 in just 25 minutes to reach the quarter-finals were she eventually lost 11-6 7-11 2-11 11-2 11-8 in 52 minutes against third seed Nour El Tayeb of Egypt.
