The English Junior Championships came to a close today. Impressive performances by all our UNSQUASHABLE Junior Ambassadors resulted in four silver medals.

In the top draw, Jack Mitterer was unable to pull off another upset, falling in three to second seeded Ben Smith. Max Forster who was upset by Jack also lost to his opponent Jared Carter. Despite closing the 1-0 deficit, he was unable to keep the momentum up in later games, falling 3-1.

In the other boys’ finals, Yusuf Sheikh narrowly lost out to four-time EJC champion Jonah Bryant. He started off strong, capitalising on a slow start from Bryant to take the lead. He fell behind 2-1 after Bryant bounced back but was able to level the scores in the fourth. However the final set went the way of Bryant, finishing the 3-2 win in 50 minutes.

In the Girls’ Under-13 finals, Charlie McCrone was unable to match up to top seed Tala Abaza despite her strong fighting spirit and lost 11-9, 11-8, 11-6. Saran Nghiem in the Girls’ Under-17 final similarly could not avenge her defeat to Asia Harris in the semifinals of the South-East Gold just a couple of weeks ago. A loss in the first set spurred her on to take the next two for a 2-1 lead, but she was not about to convert that lead, losing 3-2.

In the other matches, Ali and Ismail Khalil both logged wins in their finals matches, finishing 5th and 13th in their respective categories. Ali bounced back after losing a close first game on a tie-break while Ismail prevented a total comeback from his opponent after being 2-0 up. Harry Bloomfield in the Boys’ Under-15 finished in 29th place after a 3-1 win over Michael Chak.

We would like to congratulate all UNSQUASHABLE junior ambassadors for their performance this week at the tournament.
