The biggest upset of the day saw UNSQUASHABLE Ambassador and world number 53 George Parker defeat world number 29 Greg Lobban in a five-set thriller. Playing on the side courts at the Nottingham Squash Rackets Club, George came back from a 1-0 deficit to claim the lead at 2-1. A lapse in concentration together with a great game by Lobban saw him level the game to 2-all with an 11-1 win in the fourth. George maintained his composure in the fifth, pulling everything together to claim the win 11-8 after almost an hour of play.
Meanwhile, Patrick Rooney gave World No. 21 Declan James a good run for his money. A slow start saw him 7-3 down in the first set, before he managed to claw back to 10-all. However that was not enough as Declan closed out the game 13-11. The second set saw a similar pattern, with Patrick falling behind 10-3 at one point. A string of impressive winners saw Patrick close the gap, but that was not enough as Declan increased the lead to 2-0 with an 11-8 win. The final set showcased Patrick’s impressive retrieval skills, but after being 5-3 down, there was no turning back for Declan as he claimed the win 11-5 in the third.
It was a clinical performance by defending champion and former world number 1 James Willstrop against English youngster Charlie Lee. He was tested in the second set, falling behind 6-2, but managed to comeback and claim the 2-0 lead with an 11-8 win. The final set saw James dominate his younger opponent, and cleanly finished the match 11-5 in less than half an hour.
Final match of the evening saw top seed and world number 11 Joel Makin up against young pretender Sam Todd. After a comparatively comfortable first game, the scores were neck to neck in the second, with Joel only just closing it out 11-8. The first-time player in the main draw put in an impressive show in the third, closing the deficit. The fourth match was even up to 2-2 until Joel pulled away and never looked back to win 11-2 in the fourth.
Tomorrow’s quarterfinals feature James Willstrop up against Declan James, and we see an all-Celtic showdown with Joel Makin up against Alan Clyne. George Parker is set to face Daryl Selby, should he recover from the eye injury sustained in his earlier match.
