The UNSQUASHABLE team saw three players on the first round of the men’s draw.
Iker Pajares Bernabeu faced Malaysian Ivan Yuen in his Tournament of Champions debut. The last time they met on the tour was more than three years ago in the qualifying rounds of the 2016 Men’s World Championships with Iker winning in straight sets.
Playing on the side courts, Iker battled through two close sets to take a 2-0 lead. He wavered in the third before fighting back and closing out the match in four sets, 11-8, 12-10, 5-11, 11-9.
The other two players on the team were not as fortunate with US No. 1 Todd Harrity losing out in five to Leo Au, unable to repeat his feat of reaching the second round like last year.
Englishman George Parker lost in straight sets to Malaysian No. 1 Ng Eain Yow.
Iker will next face former World Champion and current world no. 3 Karim Abdel Gawad on Saturday. Ambassadors James Willstrop and Joel Makin are also set to play, with both players set to meet each other should they both win.
