The men’s tournament at the Edinburgh Open featured two rounds of action today as the round of 16 took place early in the afternoon followed by the quarterfinals.
Four UNSQUASHABLE ambassadors took to the stage in the round of 16, with three players falling to higher-ranked opponents. Miles Jenkins put up a commendable showing, taking a set from World No. 27 Declan James but eventually fell in 45 minutes. Rory Stewart and Fergus Richards both lost in straight sets to Alan Clyne and Paul Coll respectively.
The highest seeded UNSQUASHABLE Ambassador is Joel Makin. He started out his first match with a strong showing against Scotsman Jamie Henderson, winning 3-0 12-10, 11-4, 11-7 in just under half an hour. This performance was followed up by another match against joint-fifth seed, Alan Clyne. After a dominating first set, Joel Makin let his lead slip in the second. However, his superior physicality shone through the intense rallies in the next two sets, allowing Joel Makin to claim his spot in the semifinals.
He will now face the winner of the match between Declan James and former world champion Karim Abdel Gawad for a place in the finals.
