The English Junior Championships began yesterday in Hull as the best players across England prepare to battle it out for national honours. Seven UNSQUASHABLE Junior Ambassadors will be playing in the event.

As the first rounds commenced yesterday, all UNSQUASHABLE players made it through to the next rounds with strong performances all around.

In the youngest category, Ali Khalil dominated his opponent, winning in straight sets, 11-1, 11-0, 11-7. His brother, Ismail Khalil in the Boys’ Under-13 had a tougher time against his opponent after a slow start put him 1-0 down. But he managed to bounce back, claiming the next three sets to secure a spot in the last 16.

In the Boys’ Under-15, Harry Bloomfield and second seed Yusuf Sheikh had mixed fortunes in their matches. Not having a bye in the first round, Harry had to battle through the first round against David Menzies, and won in three, but lost to Oliver Coulcher-Porter. Yusuf Sheikh on the other hand, had a comfortable win against Rohan Sahota, 11-2, 11-3, 11-2.

Max Forster, top seeded in the Boys’ Under-19, also had a comfortable win against his opponent John Thompson, and will now face James Gibbins in the last 16. Along with him, Jack Mitterer beat out Samuel Hay in his opening round to set up a match against Will Salter in the last 16.

Both girls, Charlie McCrone and Saran Nghiem had first-round byes, and will begin their campaign today in the round of 16.
