Joel Makin was the only UNSQUASHABLE ambassador playing yesterday at the team championships, securing a historic win for Wales against sixth-seeded Hong Kong.

The clash started with the third-string players where Emyr Evans battled from 2-1 down and 7-3 down in the fifth to win the marathon match 11-8, 11-13, 12-14, 11-7, 11-7. Makin was under pressure in the first game but managed to clinch the lead after a tie-break. Falling into a rhythm, he took the next two sets with relatively comfortable scorelines to cause the upset of the day.

The win by Wales has earned them their first spot in the quarterfinals since 2005.

Today’s matches will see Wales take on Scotland in yet another battle between the British Isles. Spain and New Zealand will be looking to take on higher seeded opponents, France and England and the American team will have their first match in consolation draws.
